post

They were found in the Theban Necropolis, located west of the Nile River from the modern city of Luxor, around 1350 BC. The Colossi of Memnon (also known as the Colossi or Salamats) are two colossal statues of Amenhotep III (c. 1386–1353 BC) of the Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt. They are located west of the modern city of Luxor and face east, overlooking the Nile River. The statues depict the king seated on a throne decorated with images of his mother, his wife, the god Hapi, and other symbolic sculptures. The figures rise to 60 feet (18 m) tall and each weighs 720 tons. Both are carved from individual blocks of sandstone.
