The Sphinx represents the god Ra-Horakhty. He was the patron god of the Giza plain and its necropolis. This god had a temple, the remains of which can still be seen today in front of this colossal statue. This god is depicted with the body of a lion and the head of a man, that is, he represents the strength of a lion and the wisdom of a man; the head also represents the face or features of King Kefren. This colossal statue was carved from a monolithic limestone rock and is 18 metres high and 72 metres long.
